LeadPages Review: Who Should Use this Website Builder and a Step-by-Step Guide to Getting Started (2020)

LeadPages started out as a landing page builder. I started using it in 2013 for that reason.

But over the years, they’ve added new features and their latest addition could be a game-changer.

It’s called LeadPages Sites. In this post, you’re going to learn:

  • who this website builder is for
  • how to use the templates and publish your website
  • how to design your site for conversions and why this vital
  • the other features that you might need
  • how I achieved a 50% conversion rate from one of their templates

The Two Biggest Benefits to LeadPages Sites

LeadPages is a platform that has focused on one thing: conversions.

Most new websites I see don’t get this right. Business owners and online teachers are designing their websites in the wrong way; they’re setting it up for browsing not for converting not new visitors.

LeadPages will help you get this right as that’s their M.O. The templates they’re going to give you are designed to convert.

For example, look at the following template:

What is the action that this website is wanting the visitor to take? It’s to schedule a consultation.

(Note: I’d make those buttons bigger and a different color!)

The second advantage of LeadPages is that it’s simple to create a new website. Their template builder – along with the drag-and-drop feature – is simple to use.

You just need to add your logo, modify the colors, add your photos, and do the copywriting.

But there’s a question we have to answer…

Who Is This For?

LeadPages Sites isn’t the most feature-rich website builder out there. If you’re looking for lots of featuers and more of an e-commerce solution, check out the other two options here.

I think it’s for service providers and small businesses that want to focus on converting visitors to their website.

For example, if you:

  • offer a free consultation of any kind
  • give estimates on work based on a contact form
  • give online lessons
  • offer services

Then LeadPages will work for you.

If you want to offer a free resource and create a sales funnel using email marketing strategies, then you’ll need to upgrade and use LeadPages Basic or Pro.

With the Standard plan, you can create Landing Pages, Pop-Ups, and Alert Bars to drive more conversions.

If you’re unsure about which plan is best for you, you can always upgrade at a later date.

I love having A/B testing. This is where you can change an element of a landing page and test it to see which one converts higher.

I’ve taken my conversion rate on one of my pages from 17% to over 40% after running various tests.

Let’s talk about how to set up a website and a landing page using LeadPages.

LeadPages Tutorial: How to Create a Site Using LP

After signing up, click create new site:

Then, select the template you want to use – try a few out and see which one is best for you:

Give it a name and then start editing. Here’s what to edit:

  • The logo/title of your website
  • The colors
  • The photos
  • The copy

You’ll also want to consider your privacy policy and terms (can’t offer legal advice) and in terms of marketing, consider doing the following:

  • have big buttons and clear calls-to-action (CTAs)
  • include a video of you so your audience can better connect with you
  • tell people what will happen after they take action

If you’re an online teacher, then consider using Calendly and integrating this with LeadPages. It’s quite simple to do:

From there, copy and paste a Calendly calendar and it will do this when someone clicks that button on your website:

How to Publish a LeadPages Website

You can publish a subdomain on your LeadPages URL. But it’s better to have your own domain name.

I won’t go into detail here as their resource guide for this is great.

But it works like this:

  • you connect your domain name to LeadPages through their guide
  • you publish your website on the LeadPages backend
  • there’s no need to buy hosting as LeadPages hosts the site on their servers

What About Landing Pages?

If you offer a free guide and want to use this as a marketing tool, then upgrade to get access to landing page templates.

I’ve used these templates since 2013 and have had around 200,000 download my free resources over the years.

To do this, all you have to do is modify the templates that they suggest and publish them on your website. They have a plugin if you use WordPress.

Here’s an example of a landing page I built on the platform:

This converts at just under 50%. It was very easy to set up.

Can You Blog Using LeadPages?

You can but it is limited.

From their support page:

If you blog about once a month or less frequently, when adding a site page, use the Blog page type within the site builder and hide those pages from navigation.

They recommend installing WordPress on a subdomain if you blog regularly. This is an extra step and involves some overcoming some technical hurdles.

You can also blog on something like medium and embed that onto your site.

The Bottom Line

If you’re looking for a simple website builder that focuses on conversions, LeadPages is a fantastic option.

It’s not for you if you’d like to have e-commerce features or want to set up a membership website.

I highly recommend the company as a whole and think that their landing page builder is highly underrated. It gets results if you apply their templates correctly.
